Do we allow children to think? Philosophy classes for 3-year-olds

Posted on Updated on

Time. That is our problem. It is not about technology, contents, skills or creativity. It is a about the time required to stop: to process life, to understand each other, to let ourselves be inspired and produce new knowledge that pushes boundaries.

That is the real challenge for schools today. Is it really possible to listen, argue, think collectively, analyze and experience in just-in-time ready-made classes with 25 children? Co-creation of emotions and learning experiences. That is exactly what these lectures achieve.

It is possible to engage children in profound philosophical debates about life, death, fear, power, happiness….The amazing thing is that we often forget that children actually know and reflect about these issues, with or without our help. Talking about them and processing the arguments through language, helps them mature and develop critical thinking skills. That will be of much more use to them in the future than void memorized content that they can get through the Internet in less than 1 second.

However, adult life is all about being busy and productive. You have to be cool and creative, innovative and informed. You would not dare to be bored. It is all about intellectual inputs and very little about reflexive outputs. Long profound discussions about our inner selves are not as fashionable as an elevator pitch, but they help us grow and respect the world we live in. That, I believe, makes us better and more responsible human beings, but also, more productive business men and women. That is what we want for our children, isn’t it?
